China was originated from China more than one thousand years ago, and China was the sole maker until the 18th century. Around end of 18th century, an Englishman named Josiah Spode developed a new formula for china which mix bone ash into china clay, kaolin and China stone, then a special porcelain product created - Bone China. Normally the content of calcined bone ash used for bone china is not less than 40%, the finest bone china will have up to 50% of the final body recipe.
Bone china is the toughest porcelain, it is much stronger than it appears. It also has high whiteness and more translucent than basic porcelain. The production of bone china usually involves a two stage firing where the first, bisque, is without a glaze at 1200°C gives a translucent product and then glaze, fired at a lower temperature below 1000°C. Since there is no lead and cadimium release during production, it is food safe.
